Elevating Reef Safeguarding with New Certified Divers for Danajon Bank

The Protect Danajon Project has successfully concluded a 3-day Open Water Dive Certification at Mario Dive Resort in the Municipality of Panglao, Bohol, on April 16 – 18, 2024. The purpose of the training was to equip the trainees with the necessary skills for obtaining the PADI open water diver certification.

The training was led by PADI Instructor Atty. Dalton Presle Dacal, assisted by dive masters Ms. Alexis Mae Cancino and Mr. Nicholson D. Tan, and certified open water divers Mr. Generoso Madrona and Mr. Ranie Ybanez, who served as marshals. The trainees included faculty members from the Bohol Island State University – Clarin Campus, influencers from Bohol, and staff from the CCEF. The training consisted of three (3) main sessions: knowledge development (lecture on theoretical knowledge and examination), pool training (skill review and evaluation), and open water diving (skill review and evaluation and dive excursion).

The newly certified open water divers are now part of the Danajon Research and Monitoring Team, which will be involved in periodic monitoring and post- damage assessments in the Danajon Bank Double Barrier Reef. This strengthens the team’s ability to support coastal and marine conservation efforts.
