Immersive Experience: Danajon Bank Double Barrier Reef Exploration and Coastal Clean-Up

The Protect Danajon Project recently hosted a transformative two-day liveaboard activity on April 20-21, 2024, focusing on two key marine protected areas in Bohol – Bien Unido and Tubigon, both integral parts of the Danajon Bank Double Barrier Reef. This initiative aimed to provide stakeholders with an immersive experience of the reef, collect valuable photo documentation and resources for future Communication, Education, and Public Awareness (CEPA) boards, and create impactful reels to raise public awareness about this vital ecosystem.

The Liveaboard Expedition

The diverse group included technical staff from the Gerry Roxas Foundation (GRF), Ms. Shea Bitalac, staff from the Coastal Conservation Education Foundation (CCEF), Bohol-based influencers, the head of the Municipal Agriculture Office of Getafe, Bohol, and individual volunteers.

Engaging Activities and Insights

Participants engaged deeply with the Danajon Bank Double Barrier Reef, assessing its current state and capturing photos and videos to aid in the creation of CEPA boards and an Audio-Visual Presentation (AVP). The project aimed to foster an interactive experience, encouraging participants to document their observations and share their insights on social media, amplifying the reef’s significance and the urgent need for conservation.

Earth Day Coastal Clean-Up

In celebration of Earth Day, a coastal clean-up was conducted at Pandanon Island, Bohol. This effort, supported by the local community and participants, significantly enhancing the island’s coastal environment.

Impact and Future Actions

The successful clean-up and comprehensive documentation efforts will support the creation of engaging reels and educational materials about the Danajon Bank Double Barrier Reef. The project is committed to delivering an AVP and CEPA boards to the 10 Bohol Danajon local government units (LGUs), providing essential context and heightening awareness on the importance of the Danajon Bank Double Barrier Reef.

A Collaborative Commitment to Marine Conservation

This liveaboard experience and clean-up highlight the power of collaborative efforts in marine conservation. By uniting a diverse group of stakeholders and the local community, the Protect Danajon Project underscores the importance of collective action in preserving our precious marine ecosystems.

Stay tuned for the upcoming reels and videos that will reveal the urgent need for action and inspire greater awareness and protection for the Danajon Bank Double Barrier Reef. Together, we can work towards a sustainable future for our oceans.
