From July 8 to 12, 2024, the Protect Danajon Project, in collaboration with the Municipality of Carlos P. Garcia and the Bohol Provincial Environment Management Office (BPEMO), alongside the Bohol Island State University – Candijay Campus, carried out an underwater biophysical assessment of marine protected areas in Carlos P. Garcia, Bohol.
The focus of the assessment was on evaluating the abundance and distribution of vital marine life, including fish, corals, and macroinvertebrates. The initiative aimed to survey and monitor key marine species across (20) twenty marine protected areas within the municipality. These include Butan MPA, Bhutan Control Site, Campapanog, Poblacion Pitogo, Lipata Bantigui-an, Saguise Bantigui-an, Canmangao, Villa Milagrosa, Kabangkalan, Aguining, and Basiao. Additional MPAs in the survey were Baud, Bogo, Tugas, Tilmobo, Sto. Rosario, Saguise Sidlakan, Lipata Sidlakan, Lapinig, and Gaus.
CCEF staff played a pivotal role in augmenting this initiative, bringing their expertise and resources to support the local government and BPEMO. Their involvement ensured a comprehensive and effective assessment, contributing valuable data to guide the management and conservation of these marine areas.
This thorough survey not only helps in understanding the current state of marine ecosystems but also supports the development of informed management practices to ensure the sustainability of marine resources. The collaborative effort underscores the commitment to preserving marine biodiversity and advancing conservation efforts in the Danajon Bank Double Barrier Reef.
